11. Opening files in a program

Let's start by getting an image to open in Photoshop.

Exercise

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox.
  2. In the long white rectangle at the top of the screen, type in nhsdesigns.com. This is our class website. Tell me if this white rectangle is not visible.
  3. On nhsdesigns.com, click on the link at the bottom called basic computer skills.
  4. In the menu on the right, click on Windows XP Basics.
  5. In the new menu that appears on the right, click on 11. Opening files in a program.
  6. Right-click on the image of the blue lobster below.
  7. Select Save Image As...
  8. Save the file on the desktop.

In just about any program in Windows, you can open a file for that program with this method:

  1. Find the File Menu at the top left of the screen.
  2. Left-click on it once.
  3. Select Open...
  4. Then your program will give you an Open dialog box that lets you navigate and select your file.

Here's the Open... dialog box for Photoshop:

Exercise

  1. Photoshop should still be open. If not, open Photoshop.
  2. Use File > Open to open the file called lobster.jpg from the desktop.
