Research & Investigation

Research and investigation are the keys to developing design solutions. During this phase, the scope of work, problems and criteria are determined. The thoroughness of information obtained in this phase determines the success of the solutions.

Steps of this phase include:

1. Determine the market or audience if you can.

Demographics is a shorthand term for "population characteristics." They help identify what your audience might respond to visually. Demographic categories include:

  • Age
  • Sex
  • Race/ Ethnicity
  • Location of residence
  • Socioeconomic status (SES)
  • Religion
  • Nationality
  • Occupation
  • Education
  • Family size
  • Marital status
  • Ownership's (home, car, pet, etc.)
  • Language
  • Mobility
  • Life cycles (fertility, mortality, migration)

2. Choose the most effective means of reaching them.

For example:

  • wall paintings
  • billboards
  • printed flyers
  • web banners
  • bus stop shelters
  • magazines
  • newspapers
  • sides of buses
  • taxicab doors and roof mounts

Other parameters for your graphic design project:

  • Purpose
  • Visual characteristics (eg. classic, grunge, or folksy)
  • Distribution and end use (eg. mailing)
  • Collateral usage (eg. additional publications with the same look)
  • Production resources (eg. printers, mailing services, etc.)
