Intermediate Computer Graphics

Course Description

This yearlong course will continue to build students’ understanding of computer-generated graphics, the principles of design, and the creation of a graphic design product from concept to presentation. Students will continue working with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator at a more advanced level.

Students will continue to explore various aspects of the graphics process including: the design process, brand identity creation, scanning, digital photography manipulation, publication layout, file preparation for printing and more. Printing, graphic design history and career opportunities will be explored. Students will create real life projects like magazine layouts and posters.

This course develops essential workplace skills, emphasizing the professionalism, technology, and visual art terminology needed for today’s Graphic Designer.

 

Course Outcomes

As a result of successfully completing this course:

  1. Students will learn appropriate behavior for a professional environment.
  2. Students will become adept at the use of Adobe design software.
  3. Students will independently design graphic products from concept to presentation.
  4. Students will work collaboratively to create brand identity and related design products.
  5. Students will be well-versed in the terminology consistent with a design studio environment.

 

Prerequisites

Students will be expected to have completed an introductory course in Computer Graphics with a C or above. Students should be able (to some degree) to:

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the elements and principles of design.
  • Create and follow a simple design plan from concept through thumbnails and rough sketches to a final presentation.
  • Work professionally within a design team.
  • Identify numerous graphic design careers which are attainable with the right training.
  • Identify the various products created by graphic designers.
  • Use the elements and principles of design in a decisive fashion, and explain design choices.
  • Manipulate various design tools to create the result one wants.
  • Understand how to create an attractive layout that communicates a message effectively.
  • Explain how color works, and what various colors/color combinations communicate to others.
  • Understand how typography works, and use it effectively in a design.
  • Legally obtain or create imagery for a design.
  • Master the basics of digital design, such as image formats, layering and color notation.

 

Expected Course Path

Students who successfully complete Intermediate Computer Graphics will be prepared to take Advanced Computer Graphics.
